Track Title. 1 Everything Is Broken. 2 Highway 61 Revisited. 3 Tangled Up In Blue. 4 Gotta Serve Somebody. 5 Rainy Day Women 12 & 35. 6 Ballad Of A Thin Man. 7 Maggie’s Farm. 8 Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. 9 Subterranean Homesick Blues. 10 On The Road Again. 11 All I Really Want To Do. 12 Blowin’ In The Wind. Upon hearing Everything Is Broken, the opening track of Ben Sidran’s Dylan Different, a collection of Bob Dylan covers that uncovers a near symbiotic connection to his source’s material, one wonders what took him so long to record this. Sidran chose a dozen tunes from Dylan s songbook and recorded them over four days in France, applying his requisite musicality, unaffected jazzman’s cool, and streetwise yet elegant poetic imagination. There is a decidedly old-school feel to the manner in which this material is recorded that recalls his late-’70s sides. Sidran plays Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and acoustic piano as well as a Hammond B-3, and is accompanied by a killer backing band that includes trumpeter Michael Leonhart, drummer Alberto Malo, bassist Marcello Giuliani, saxophonist Bob Malach, guitarist Rodolphe Burger, and vocalist Amy Helm. His son Leo did the horn arrangements and played additional piano, B-3, and koto, and there are guests on backing vocals, including Georgie Fame, who duets on Rainy Day Women 12 & 35, and Jorge Drexler on “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” What it all adds up to is a truly new presentation of Dylan s work that seamlessly fits Sidran s aesthetic without removing the authority of these songs from their historical context. Check the nocturnal funky groove on Gotta Serve Somebody or the bluesy dual pianos on Tangled Up in Blue, on which Sidran does his talk-singing accompanied by female backing vocalists on the chorus and a restrained horn section. He turns the tune into a slippery, finger-popping club number.

Track Title. 1 Wrists Of Kings. 2 Not In Rivers, But In Drops. 3 Dulcinea. 4 Over Root And Thorn. 5 1000 Shards. 6 All Out Of Time, All Into Space. 7 Holy Tears. 8 Firdous E Bareen. 9 Garden Of Barren. Isis pushed the envelope so far on 2002′s Oceanic and 2004′s gloriously pretentious concept album Panopticon that they spawned countless imitators, which is the greatest form of flattery in some quarters. In the Absence of Truth is the fourth full-length from Isis. This set is not a brave leap forward — most of us haven’t caught up with the last one, and Oceanic spawned an even more experimental set of remixes in 2005 — but a further look up the holy mountain to a new plateau, a hike to sacred ground. Thank the gods. On these nine tracks, Isis never nervously explore; instead they seem to know exactly what corners to look into, what crags to reach in and grab onto, what caves lead to a blinding light that holds within it both everything and nothing. Isis is in full command this time out and as an album, In the Absence of Truth is as solidly explosive and as adventuresome as Panopticon, but their elemental control over the music is greater, therefore creating a more even production. Aaron Turner’s vocals still etch an unclean line between half-sung and guttural roar. The lyrics are oblique and the voice is back in the mix of that nearly unrestrained savage wail of guitars, basses, drums, and keyboards. The pace is deliberately slow and circular on all cuts. Produced and engineered (again) by Matt Bayles, the sonic attack may be measured, but it is also pregnant with beauty and ferocity, with a guitar sound that is singular in the world of heavy metal and underground rock. While the opener “Wrists of Kings” is fraught with thundering tom toms, a shimmering Hammond organ, and counterpoint guitars and basses, it’s rhythm is the key to its melodic frame.

Attributes: 2 Cd Discs:2. Label: Emm/Right Stuff ( RSTF ). Product Type: Compact Disc. Catalog : 35885. On Sale: Yes, Sale Ends 30 Sep 2011. UPC: 724383588527. Configuration: D: CD. Maze have been a fan favorite since the mid-’70s; while they’ve received little critical notice or adulation except among soul and R&B scribes, Maze have seldom been out of the charts since making their debut on Capitol. Lead singer Frankie Beverly’s roots extend back to classic doo wop and East Coast soul; although he made the transition to funk, then urban material, Beverly always had plenty of soul and passion in his vocals. Maze also blazed their own musical trail; when such competitors as Earth, Wind & Fire, the Bar-Kays, Con Funk Shun, and Slave were featuring surging horn sections and jazz-tinged arrangements with heavy basslines, Beverly and company favored rock-influenced guitar parts juxtaposed against soulful organ riffs or synthesizer riffs and just a trace of reggae and/or Latin rhythm. Beverly enjoyed several hits on Capitol, but became unsatisfied with the label’s inability to break the group beyond the R&B/funk market. They departed Capitol in the late ’80s, and resurfaced on Warner Bros, where they continued making strong, distinctive releases. Anthology gathers the best (at least most of the best) singles the band did for Capitol, among them classics like “Southern Girl,” “Before I Let Go,” the complete “Joy and Pain,” and “Happy Feelin’s.” British journalist David Nathan’s notes are comprehensive, and nicely combine anecdotal and discographical references.
