Watch Nas Perform 'Illmatic' With Orchestra in PBS Concert Film Trailer

Nas has shared the new trailer for the upcoming PBS concert film that teamed the Illmatic rapper with the National Symphony Orchestra for a unique performance.

Great Performances — Nas Live From the Kennedy Center: Classical Hip-Hop finds the rapper performing his 1994 masterpiece at the venerable Washington, D.C. venue backed by the orchestra.

“It’s crazy, you know, I wrote this in the projects in New York City. Here we are in the capital of America, Washington, DC, and, you know, a bunch of white people with strings and all that, playing this album, and they feeling it,” Nas says of the collaboration in the trailer.

The concert film, recorded in March 2014 while the rapper celebrated Illmatic‘s 20th anniversary, charts Nas’ Queensbridge upbringing and career, the impact of Illmatic as well as the rehearsals and preparations to bring the album to the Kennedy Center stage.

“This was the first time me as a classical orchestra conductor was going to branch out into the realm of doing hip-hop music and rap music. And the idea of finally tackling this genre was something I was really looking forward to do,” National Symphony Orchestra Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke said in a statement.

Great Performances — Nas Live From the Kennedy Center: Classical Hip-Hop airs February 2nd on PBS, after which it will be available for streaming via PBS’ website.

Hear Rozzi's Soulful New Song 'Uphill Battle'

San Francisco singer-songwriter, Rozzi, emotes about romantic tribulations in her new piano ballad, “Uphill Battle.”

“I cried on your shoulder right there in the kitchen/ My friends in the next room, so close they could listen,” she croons over a minor chord. Rozzi’s intense vibrato builds alongside organ and drums. “I am who I am, and I am a lot to handle/ You do the best you can, but I am an uphill battle.”

Rozzi has said the song comes from her overly-analytical nature. “It can be hard to care intensely, to love intensely, to want intensely,” she wrote. Some days I wish I could just let it all go – but that’s not who I am. For better or worse, I think this song might be the best description of myself I’ve ever written.”

Rozzi emerged in 2012 with a vocal spot on Maroon 5 song “Come Away to the Water.” She became the first artist to sign with singer Adam Levine’s 222 Records the following year. In 2015, she issued two EPs, Space and Time, for the label and opened for Maroon 5’s subsequent North American tour.

“Uphill Battle” is the lead single from the singer’s upcoming debut LP, due out later this year. It’s her first for Small Giant/Columbia Records.

Jack White Details Track List for New LP 'Boarding House Reach'

Jack White detailed the track list and release date for his upcoming third solo LP, Boarding House Reach. The 13-track album – his first since 2014’s Lazaretto – is out March 23rd via Third Man/Columbia.

The singer-songwriter announced the album on Wednesday, issuing lead single “Connected By Love” and album cut “Respect Commander.” White produced and recorded Boarding House Reach at Sear Sound in New York City, Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and his own Third Man Studio in Nashville. The record features a wide line-up of new musicians – many of whom have worked heavily in hip-hop and R&B – including drummer Louis Cato (Beyoncé, Q-Tip, John Legend), keyboardist Neal Evans (Soulive, Talib Kweli, John Scofield) and bassist NeonPhoenix (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z).

“Connected to Love” was the first song White wrote in his Nashville apartment, where he worked using the same type of equipment he used at age 15 (a quarter-inch four-track recorder, a basic mixer and stripped-down instrumentation). The multi-instrumentalist told Rolling Stone that his original chorus was “I’m Infected By Love,” but he changed his mind. “I thought ‘Well, people won’t get that metaphor — they’ll turn that into, ‘Well, Do you have an STD, or something?'” he said, laughing. “It might hurt the rest of the messages of the song if I kept that as the main thing. So I changed ‘Infected’ to ‘Connected’ and then started to feed off of that.”

White also announced a special Third Man Vault Package themed around Boarding House Reach, including a limited-edition, blue-and-black-swirl vinyl edition of the LP and a two-song 7-inch single featuring demo versions of “Connected By Love” and “Why Walk a Dog?” Subscriptions for the package are available today through January 31st.
