Richard Hell and the Voidoids Prep 'Blank Generation' Reissue

Richard Hell and the Voidoids will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their debut album Blank Generation with a limited edition reissue featuring previously unreleased recordings. The reissue arrives November 24th as a two-CD set (limited to 5,250 copies) or double vinyl LP (4,500), both of which will be sold at independent retailers for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event.

The new set features a remastered version of Blank Generation from engineer Greg Calbi, who also mastered the 1977 original. The second disc boasts a slew of rarities including previously unreleased alternate takes, which were recorded during Hell and the Voidoids’ initial sessions at Electric Lady Studios. Other offerings include out-of-print singles and rare bootleg live tracks recorded at the band’s first gig at CBGB in 1976.

The collection also includes a booklet featuring a new essay from Hell and previously unpublished photos by Roberta Bayley. The booklet will also feature an interview Hell conducted with Voidoids guitarist Ivan Julian, plus snapshots of Hell’s notebooks and private papers.

Even before recording Blank Generation, Hell had cemented his place in punk history. He and Tom Verlaine co-founded Television, after which Hell formed the Heartbreakers with New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunder. After Hell split with the Heartbreakers, he embarked on a solo career, enlisting Julian, Robert Quine and Marc Bell to serve as his backing band, the Voidoids.

Richard Hell and the Voidoids would only release one more studio album after Blank Generation, 1982’s Destiny Street. In 1984, Hell retired from music and has spent the past several decades working as an author. He’s penned two novels and several nonfiction books, including an acclaimed memoir, I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp.

Flashback: Smashing Pumpkins Rip Through 'Cherub Rock' in 1993

Billy Corgan kicked off his solo, acoustic Ogilala tour this weekend with a pair of shows at Brooklyn, New York’s Murmrr Theater that featured a complete performance of his new album along with selections from his entire career. In all the press he’s done around the release of the album he’s done little to clamp down on persistent rumors that the original lineup of the Smashing Pumpkins are gearing up for a possible reunion tour. “For once in my life I’m willing to give [people] what [they’d] like to see, no problem,” he told TeamRock. “No funny set list, no agenda, strictly let’s have a fucking party and let’s really fucking celebrate.”

It’s been a long time since the original lineup of the group had a “fucking party” onstage. They last played together at a small run of shows in 1999, but it was hardly a great time for anyone in the group. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin had just returned to the band following three years in exile due to his heroin addiction, and bassist D’Arcy Wretzky was days away from walking out of the band. The group would completely implode a little over a year later.

Let’s go back to a time when the original Pumpkins were at their absolute peak as a live band. This is a 1993 performance of “Cherub Rock” at the Metro in their hometown of Chicago. It was right around the release of Siamese Dream, the album that would transform them into one of the biggest bands in America. There was a lot of darkness around the corner, but at this moment they were an unstoppable force.

A few weeks back, Corgan explained to Rolling Stone why the group dissolved. “We were in a pressure cooker for 13, 14 years,” he said. “We were literally together almost non-stop for a long time. We did a lot of work and we put ourselves through some crazy shit. When the family thing broke, it was one of those things like, ‘Hey, have you talked to your cousin?’ ‘Eh, I love him, but you know, whatever.’ So it was like that for a long time, and now that that’s over, and the family thing is resolved, it’s awesome.”

Whether that leads to an actual reunion tour remains to be seen, but when Coachella announces their 2018 lineup in early January, it’s very easy to imagine their name on top of the poster.

Bob Weinstein Accused of Sexual Harassment

Bob Weinstein, the brother of Harvey Weinstein, was accused of sexual harassment, Variety reports. Amanda Segel, who served as an executive producer on the Weinstein Company drama The Mist, said the film and TV executive made numerous unwanted advances towards her during the show’s production.

The allegations come after The New York Times and The New Yorker published massive reports in which numerous women accused Weinstein’s brother Harvey of harassment and assault.

Segel said Bob Weinstein began harassing her in June 2016 and continued for three months. The producer said it started with a dinner invitation, which she accepted on professional grounds. However, Segel claims she learned that Weinstein asked co-workers whether she was single, and then at dinner, he asked her several highly intimate questions. After dinner, Weinstein reportedly asked Segel to drive him back to his hotel, which she did. When they arrived, he then asked her to come up to his room, an offer she declined.

After that dinner, Weinstein allegedly sent Segal various e-mails filled with questions that were not about The Mist. He also reportedly invited her to a party at a rented house, an invitation Segal gathered was not actually for a party, but rather so that the two of them could be alone. Furthermore, Segal said Weinstein continued to ask her to dinner and joked that, because he was her boss, he could fire her if she said no. Segal said she eventually accepted another dinner invitation, but this time brought along her Mist co-worker Christian Thorpe. Segal claims Weinstein was clearly unhappy that Thorpe was there.

“‘No’ should be enough,” Segel told Variety. “After ‘no,’ anybody who has asked you out should just move on. Bob kept referring to me that he wanted to have a friendship. He didn’t want a friendship. He wanted more than that. My hope is that ‘no’ is enough from now on.”

A representative for Weinstein said, “Bob Weinstein had dinner with Ms. Segel in L.A. in June 2016. He denies any claims that he behaved inappropriately at or after the dinner. It is most unfortunate that any such claim has been made.”

The alleged harassment reportedly stopped after Segel’s lawyer, David Fox, contacted executives at the Weinstein Company and told them that she would leave the show if Weinstein continued to make unwanted advances towards her. Eventually, an agreement was worked out in which Segel remained on the show, but did not have to be in the same room with Weinstein or speak with him on the phone. Segal has since left The Mist and is working on a new show while developing her own projects.

The allegations against Bob Weinstein come as he and the Weinstein company continue to grapple with the fallout from the Harvey Weinstein scandal. While the Weinstein Company swiftly fired Harvey from the company’s board, the reports alleged that his behavior was enabled by a web of executives, assistants and producers who worked for him. Nevertheless, the Weinstein Company has claimed they “had no idea” about Weinstein’s behavior. Bob Weinstein has also condemned his brother and claimed there was “no fucking way was I aware that that was the type of predator that he was.”

Watch Wyclef Jean's Sultry New Video for 'Turn Me Good'

Wyclef Jean unveiled an alluring new video for “Turn Me Good,” a track off his latest album, The Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee

The Jose Javy Ferrer-directed clip finds Wyclef cutting up a smokey red-lit club in a sharp tuxedo, crooning the sultry tune while a cadre of back-up dancers surround him. While Wyclef sings “Turn Me Good,” his partner waits for him in a limo outside, watching their previous encounters on her phone until the singer finally rushes off the stage to meet her.

Wyclef released The Carnival III in September, though the musician is already prepping a deluxe edition of the album, set to arrive November 3rd. The set will include the full LP, a new song, “California,” and several remixes of album tracks that boast new guest verses from N.O.R.E., CRO, Boi D, Jazzy Amra and more.
