Bobby Brown Miniseries, Death Row Records Doc Headed to BET

Bobby Brown and Death Row Records will be the subjects of upcoming television shows planned for BET, Variety reports. The network announced the two projects on Thursday.

The Bobby Brown Story miniseries will be written by Abdul Williams and executive produced by Jesse Collins. The pair was behind the network’s three-part miniseries hit, The New Edition Story. Bobby Brown will chronicle the artist’s rise, from New Edition to his solo career. Each episode of the two-part miniseries will be two hours long.

The six-part documentary series Death Row Chronicles is described as “part true-crime murder mystery and part hip-hop drama, this compelling docu-series will comb through mountains of misinformation, uncovering key evidence and witnesses who will reveal the truth about the bitter rivalries surrounding its legends,” according to Deadline. Each episode will be an hour long.

The legendary label renowned for their artists, including Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and label cofounder Dr. Dre also gained notoriety from cofounder and CEO Suge Knight. The documentary will celebrate the groundbreaking music produced while offering “an unflinching look at the label and its legacy.”

Beyond BET’s look at Death Row Records, other creative works related to the label will soon be released. The Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me opens on June 16th. HBO’s The Defiant Ones, about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine and their relationship, which began with Death Row Records, is also slated to air this year.

The 1975 Announce New Album 'Music for Cars'

The 1975 have announced the follow-up to 2016’s I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It. Singer Matt Healy revealed the less wordy name of their forthcoming album, Music for Cars, during an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio on Thursday.

The singer also revealed a few more details about the third LP in the band’s planned trilogy. Amid talking about the band’s career trajectory – from getting a record deal to making art personal – and discussing artists who make subversive pop music, Healy dropped the news about their upcoming record.

“The next record’s called Music for Cars,” Healy told Lowe. “That’s the title and it references our second EP or our third EP.”

Healy also discussed the “eras” of the last two albums and said that their next record marks “an end of an era,” though that doesn’t necessarily signify a finale for the band.

Music for Cars has always been called that, and we were always gonna do a trilogy of records,” he said. “And I’m not saying that after this album it’s the end of the 1975, but it’s definitely the end of an era.”

As for if there are solo record plans in Healy’s near future, the singer recently told Rolling Stone that it wasn’t in the cards. “No – I mean, it’s not like the guys are getting in my way,” he said. “I think things like that happen when people want another creative outlet. I’ll just make a different-sounding 1975 record.”

Though Healy did not reveal an exact release date during his Beats 1 interview, he said Music for Cars would come out in 2018.

Fall Out Boy Preview New LP 'Mania' With Sinister 'Young and Menace' Video

Fall Out Boy have released a cinematic clip for lead single “Young and Menace,” the first single from their seventh studio album Mania set for release on September 15th.

A young girl raised by beast-like creatures is seen discovering her own humanity in the “Young and Menace” video, asking her animal parents about her past. She then escapes to see the human world, an adventure ominously soundtracked by the harsh, electro-rock song that references Nikki Sixx and Britney Spears’ “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Towards the end, she ends up at a Fall Out Boy concert before waking up in her bed to viciously fighting, human parents.

In a statement, bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz compared the video to Elf. “She realizes that maybe she is human after all,” he explains. “But maybe the line between us and monsters is blurrier than we think.”

Wentz also noted that “Young and Menace” reminds him of his childhood in the Chicago suburbs. “I didn’t look like anyone there or feel like anyone. I felt like an outsider in my own town,” he says. “It wasn’t until I discovered punk rock and that community that I realized I did fit in somewhere in this world with the other people who didn’t fit in.”

Following the release of Mania, Fall Out Boy will embark on a North American tour, which will launch October 20th at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena and end on November 18th at Phoenix’s Talking Stick Resort Arena.
