Cuba Gooding, Sr., Main Ingredient Singer, Dead at 72

Cuba Gooding, Sr., the lead singer for soul group the Main Ingredient and father of actor Cuba Gooding, Jr., has died at the age of 72. Gooding was found dead in his car on Thursday in Woodland Hills, CA, according to ABC.

While the cause of death remains unknown, authorities said Gooding appeared to have died of natural causes or a drug overdose. According to ABC, alcohol bottles and drug paraphernalia were found in the singer’s vehicle.

Gooding Sr. had served as a backing singer on recordings for the Main Ingredient before stepping into the lead role in 1971, following the death of former lead singer Donald McPherson. The group garnered several gold singles, including “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely,” “Happiness is Just Around the Bend,” “Rolling Down a Mountainside” and their highest-charting hit with 1972’s “Everybody Plays the Fool.”

Gooding was born April 27th, 1944 in New York. He grew up with Main Ingredient members Tony Sylvester, Luther Simmons, Jr. and McPherson in Harlem. Sylvester, Simmons and McPherson formed the group the Poets, which then became the Insiders before renaming themselves the Main Ingredient. Gooding worked with the group as a backing singer, but when McPherson became too sick to tour, Gooding sang lead during live concerts. McPherson was diagnosed with leukemia and died on July 4th, 1971.

With Gooding as lead singer, the group had their first million-selling single with “Everybody Plays the Fool.” It held the Number Two spot on the R&B chart for three weeks and hit Number Three on the all-genre Hot 100 chart.

Gooding signed with Motown Records in 1977 as a solo artist, where he released two albums. His debut, The 1st Album, housed his charting single “Mind Pleaser.” In 1979, he re-teamed with the Main Ingredient and worked with them through the Eighties. In 1983, Gooding recorded a remake of “Happiness is Just Around the Bend,” which became a dance hit. Gooding also scored a hit in 2012 with “This Christmas.”

He had four children with his wife Shirley Gooding: actors Cuba Gooding, Jr., Omar Gooding and April Gooding, and musician Tommy Gooding.

Beyonce, Donald Glover Win Peabody Awards

Beyoncé and Donald Glover are among the recipients of Peabody Awards for entertainment programs, Peabody Awards Board of Jurors revealed on Thursday. This year, four winning works in Peabody Awards’ entertainment and documentary categories have music connections.

Beyoncé now adds a Peabody to her collection of accolades for visual album Lemonade, which aired on HBO. “The audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination, while crafting a stunning and sublime masterpiece about the lives of women of color and the bonds of friendship seldom seen or heard in American popular culture,” jurors said of her work.

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, won for his FX television show Atlanta. “Donald Glover’s enchanting series on the struggles of two young black men trying to make it in Atlanta’s rap scene blends vibrant character study and rich socio-political commentary in delivering a detailed and textured exploration of a Southern city,” the judges noted.

Peabody Awards documentary winners were announced on Tuesday. Of the 12 recipients, two are music documentaries. Banger Films’ Hip-Hop Evolution was recognized by jurors for being “an entertaining, consummate history of hip-hop music told in a series of interviews with influential MCs, DJs and moguls who were there at the beginning of the genre’s birth and through its dynamic evolution.”

Film First and HBO Documentaries’ MAVIS! also received a Peabody Award. “More than just a biopic, this story celebrates the deep influence of Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers across music genres – from gospel to soul and rock ‘n’ roll,” the judges wrote. “MAVIS! illustrates the history of social movements in America and is a powerful reminder of one woman’s impact on popular culture.”

In its 76th year, Peabody Awards honor excellence in radio, television and other forms of electronic media. The winners for News, Radio/Podcast, Children’s, Education and Public Service categories will be announced on April 25th. The ceremony takes place on May 20th at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.

Watch Aretha Franklin Honor Clive Davis After Doc Premiere

Aretha Franklin led an all-star tribute to Clive Davis following the premiere of a new documentary about the music mogul, Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, at the Tribeca Film Festival Wednesday. The concert at Radio City Music Hall also featured performances from Jennifer Hudson, Earth Wind & Fire, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon and Dionne Warwick.

Franklin spoke briefly about her long working relationship with Davis, saying, “What a wonderful, caring, caring humanitarian. He’s not only the chieftain who sits in the executive office and takes care of all the business; he takes care of his artists as well.” The soul legend then launched into a chilling rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” closing the Carol King and Gerry Goffin-penned tune with several remarkable vocal runs.

Hudson followed with a tribute to both Davis – who signed her after her run on American Idol – and one of the mogul’s most acclaimed artists, Whitney Houston.

Hudson opened her set with a rendition of “Hallelujah” before unleashing a medley of Houston hits that included “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know.”

Earth, Wind & Fire took the stage for an invigorating performance of “September” and got an assist on the horn parts from another hugely successful Clive Davis artist: Kenny G.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives
was directed by Chris Perkel and is based on Davis’ 2013 autobiography of the same name. The film explores Davis’ remarkable life and career working with countless artists including Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, Billy Joel, Patti Smith and Christina Aguilera. Apple Music acquired the rights to The Soundtrack of Our Lives prior to its Tribeca premiere, though a wide release date has yet to be announced.

Bill Murray Teams With Cellist for Musical Stage Show 'New Worlds'

Bill Murray will premiere a new musical stage show, New Worlds, this summer and release an album to accompany the performances in August, The New York Times reports. The project will boast a mix of songs, literary readings and chamber music and finds Murray teaming with acclaimed cellist Jan Vogler.

New Worlds will premiere July 20th at Festival Napa Valley in California. A North American tour will follow, though a full schedule has yet to be announced.

Murray will sing an array of tunes including Stephen Foster’s standard “Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair” and selections from West Side Story. He’ll also read snippets of Walt Whitman and Ernest Hemingway while a Volger-led trio performs Schubert, Bach and Piazzolla. The other musicians include violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez.

With all four members hailing from different parts of the world – the United States, China, East Germany and Venezuela – New Worlds will explore issues such as identity and American history. For instance, one section finds Murray reading a part of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while the trio plays “Moon River.”

“We are from four different continents,” Murray said. “And when the continents come together, the music moves right across the peninsulas from one to the other. It’s just a short journey from one continent to the other.”

New Worlds marks another unique moment in Murray’s remarkable, multi-faceted career, of which music has always played a major part. One of Murray’s best known Saturday Night Live sketches was “Nick the Lounge Singer,” while his acclaimed turn in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation featured a memorable karaoke scene

In 2015, he reunited with Coppola for a music- and cameo-filled holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas, and recently appeared on Paul Shaffer’s new album. Their collaboration, “Happy Street,” will be released as a seven-inch single on Record Store Day, April 22nd.

Watch Kate Tempest Perform Eerie 'Europe Is Lost' in Empty Venue

Rapper-spoken word artist Kate Tempest spouts visceral, rhythmically dizzying angst in an exclusive live version of “Europe Is Lost,” filmed April 13th at New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge. Rolling Stone filmed the performance between her band’s soundcheck and show, and the eeriness of the empty venue only adds to the drama.

Throughout the track, Tempest paints a harrowing character portrait of “Esther,” a social worker agonized by the cruelty and hypocrisy of a consumerist society filled with overmedicated children, terrorism, gun violence, racism, poverty and fetishized celebrities.

“Europe is lost, America is lost, London lost/ Still we are clamoring victory,” she observes over wobbling synths, alternating between a deadpan spoken word energetic hip-hop flow. “All that is meaningless/ We have learned nothing from history.”

“Europe Is Lost” highlights Tempest’s acclaimed second LP, 2016’s Let Them Eat Chaos. The band will kick off a run of international festival dates on July 8th with a spot at Au Foin De La Rue in Saint-Denis-de-Gastines, France.
