Stevie Wonder Pays Tribute to Motown Songwriter Sylvia Moy

Stevie Wonder penned a tribute to Motown songwriter Sylvia Moy, the co-writer on Wonder’s early hits like “Uptight (Everything’s Alright),” “My Cherie Amour” and “I Was Made to Love Her.” Moy died Saturday at the age of 78.

“How do you stop loving the ones you loved for a lifetime – you don’t! Sylvia Moy has made it possible to enrich my world of songs with some of the greatest lyrics,” Wonder wrote in a statement to Rolling Stone. “But, not only that, she, through her participation and our co-writing those songs, helped me become a far better writer of lyrics.”

Following the chart-topping success of the then-13-year-old Little Stevie Wonder’s 1963 single “Fingertips,” the singer struggled with both a change in his voice and a dry spell of hits. Motown honcho Berry Gordy considered terminating Wonder’s contract, but Moy persuaded him to keep Wonder as a Motown artist.

The partnership between Moy, Wonder and songwriter Henry Cosby yielded hits like “Uptight (Everything’s Alright),” “My Cherie Amour,” “I Was Made to Love Her,” “I’m Wondering” and and Signed, Sealed & Delivered‘s “Never Had a Dream Come True,” the final track the trio co-wrote together in 1969.

In 2006, Wonder surprised Moy by appearing at her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“Even in these later years, I longed for us to collaborate again, yet who am I to fight with the Most High in His decision to making her one of his angels of song for eternity,” Wonder wrote in his tribute. “Maybe someday in eternity, at its given time and space, we will write together again. I love you, Sylvia.”

Wonder closed out his remembrance with the melody of “My Cherie Amour,” “La La La La La La… La La La La La La.”

Lady Gaga, Foo Fighters, 100 More Artists Sign Guitar for Planned Parenthood Raffle

Lady Gaga, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty, Katy Perry, Queens of the Stone Age and Michael Stipe are among the 102 artists and producers that autographed an acoustic guitar that’s being raffled to raise funds for Planned Parenthood.

The organizers of 7 Inches for Planned Parenthood, a vinyl-and-download series, are spearheading the sweepstakes, with people who donate $10 or more automatically entered into the raffle for the unique instrument.

The Gibson CJ-165 comes courtesy of Reuben Cox, the owner of Old Style Guitar Shop in Los Angeles, who in the past five months has recruited over 100 artists to sign the guitar. Cox started collecting the autographs after Election Day, the result of which immediately threatened the future of Planned Parenthood.

Sam Smith, Ryan Adams, John Legend, the Animals’ Eric Burdon, Jackson Browne, Henry Rollins, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen, Mark Ronson, MC5’s Wayne Kramer and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner are also among the diverse group of musicians to autograph the guitar.

Search Warrants from Prince's Death Unsealed

Nearly a year after Prince died, search warrants from the singer’s Paisley Park compound have been unsealed, providing some insight into his unexpected death at the age of 57.

The search warrant, conducted less than a week after Prince’s death, uncovered controlled substances – mainly painkillers that required a doctor’s prescription – hidden throughout the compound, including stashed in vitamin containers.

The Star Tribune writes that one vitamin D bottle contained Ondansetron Hydrochloride, also known as Zofran, a medication sometimes used to lessen the side effects of opiate withdrawal.

According to the search warrant, investigators were “made aware by witnesses that were interviewed, that Prince recently had a history of going through withdrawals, which are believed to be the result of the abuse of prescription medicine.”

NBC News reports that unspecified controlled substances were also found next to handwritten “U Got the Look” lyrics in a suitcase bearing the name “Peter Bravestrong,” an often-used Prince alias. (The search warrants revealed that Prince’s personal email address was PeterBravestrong@gmail.com.)

Both Prince’s physician Dr. Michael Schulenberg and his longtime bodyguard and assistant Kirk Johnson admitted to facilitating the artist with some controlled substances – Schulenberg said one oxycodone prescription for Prince was made out to Johnson “for Prince’s privacy” – but, at the time of the search warrant, investigators were unable to track the source of the powerful painkiller Fentanyl that Prince accidentally overdosed on.

A joint state and federal criminal investigation is still ongoing to find the source of the Fentanyl, since Prince was never prescribed that drug.

Investigators also found that “interviews with those who were at Paisley Park the morning Prince was found deceased have provided inconsistent and, at times, contradictory statements.”

Johnson especially was inconsistent with his statements to police, saying he didn’t know Prince was addicted to painkillers, even though he reached out to a noted rehabilitation clinic ays earlier regarding the singer’s addiction. Johnson ultimately told investigators that Prince battled both addiction and withdrawal prior to his death.

To aid their investigation, authorities mined through Paisley Park email and cellphone records; however, Prince did not own a cell phone after he claimed he was hacked several years earlier.

Little Dragon Talk Staying Weird While Learning From the Mainstream

In December of 2014, the Grammy Awards released the names of the nominees for the upcoming ceremony. The Best Dance/Electronic Album category contained Aphex Twin, a 1990s legend returning after a lengthy hiatus; Robyn, the beloved Swedish pop star who had already been nominated three times; and Deadmau5, a mainstream dance-fest mainstay enjoying his fifth nomination. And then there was Little Dragon, a Swedish quartet that has never cracked the Hot 100.

“It caught us off guard for sure,” says lead singer Yukimi Nagano, speaking over the phone from Los Angeles, where her group was rehearsing for a U.S. tour to promote their new album Season High. The nomination also prompted an aesthetic dilemma – what does a band that is used to being left of center do when the mainstream catches up to them?

The Grammy nod demonstrated how much pop had shifted in Little Dragon’s direction since the band released their first album in 2007. On that eponymous debut, electronic music and R&B lived happily side by side. This partnership turned out to be prescient: while these two forms had been mixing for years on million-selling records – Janet Jackson’s “Empty,” Kelis’ “Caught Out There” – the combination was still somewhat unusual for an indie group. A decade later, an electronic backdrop and a working knowledge of Aaliyah hits is more or less standard, even on songs by Banks and Maggie Rogers that get played on rock radio.

Nagano says that she, keyboardist Håkan Wirenstrand, bassist Fredrik Källgren Wallin and drummer Erik Bodin arrived at their sound largely by accident. “I really had this dream of being an R&B singer,” she explains. “Håkan was just listening to Vangelis and Kraftwerk. Erik came in with more hip-hop references, Fred as well. Alone, we wouldn’t be that strong. If I would’ve sung on some big producer’s stuff, it would’ve been totally boring. [My bandmates] brought something special out of me, and I brought something special out of them.”

Other artists endorsed the combination. R&B polymath Raphael Saadiq – whose wide-ranging résumé includes years as a hitmaker in the group Tony! Toni! Toné! and production on Solange’s acclaimed A Seat at the Table – drafted Nagano to contribute to his album Stone Rollin’. “Their songwriting is great,” he says of Little Dragon. “A million streaming records come out a day, but Little Dragon was one of those ones that got me.” In 2016, the group worked with the veteran rappers De La Soul, the dance-floor maven Kaytranada and the Australian big-room producer Flume, another indication that multiple branches of pop are embracing Little Dragon’s approach.

Despite the band’s interest in collaborating with others, past Little Dragon records have typically been insular affairs with no guests. The band opened up more than ever before for Season High, even welcoming their first guest star: a high-school friend named Agge, who contributed a histrionic guitar solo. And Little Dragon also solicited additional production from both James Ford – a member of Simian Mobile Disco who has overseen albums for Arctic Monkeys and Depeche Mode – and Patrik Berger, a savvy studio presence with a winning credit list (see Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” and Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap”).

“It has taken us time to let people in,” admits Nagano. “I think it’s an ego and a pride thing – we’ve been very protective about not necessarily wanting people to touch our stuff. But we’re getting better at it. When you’re caught up in your bubble, it’s always good to have someone from the outside who has some distance to give some advice and some focus. At the end of the day, we want to evolve and learn new tricks.”

Season High is not a jarring, transitional album. This group has never felt compelled to induce whiplash; in fact, their willingness to lay back and luxuriate presaged a wave of reflective, unhurried pop that remains trendy today. “We have an easy time writing dreamy, slow songs,” Nagano acknowledges. “We always have too many.”

There are a few of these on Season High, just as there are on their old records. The most striking is “Butterflies,” where the band assembles a zen garden of serene synth tones. “I’m really proud of that song,” Nagano says.

Still, Little Dragon have never been as forthright as they are on Season High‘s club-friendly first half. The intro to “Celebrate” hints at both Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait” and New Order’s “Blue Monday,” while “The Pop Life” stacks galloping synth progressions, and “Sweet” – abetted by Berger – organizes zinging electronics and blurting backing vocals into a Eurodisco march.

These moments all serve as signs that the group isn’t planning to stay put and wait for the rest of pop to pass them by. “I know we have our sound, but I hope we can keep evolving and even if there is a genre that we’re in, not get stuck in that,” Nagano says. “In high school, we’d try to impress each other – have you heard this? – with any kind of music. We really want to be universal in that way.”

Bruce Langhorne, Bob Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine Man' Inspiration, Dead at 78

Bruce Langhorne, the folk musician and session guitarist that inspired Bob Dylan‘s classic song “Mr. Tambourine Man,” died Friday at his home in Venice, California. He was 78.

Langhorne’s friend Cynthia Riddle confirmed the guitarist’s death to the New York Times, citing kidney failure as the cause.

Langhorne first recorded alongside Dylan during the sessions for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan‘s “Corrina, Corrina” and Dylan’s first single “Mixed Up Confusion.” He would later play a critical role on 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home, where he served as lead guitarist on tracks like “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “Maggie’s Farm” and “Outlaw Blues” and provided the notable countermelody to “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

“If you had Bruce playing with you, that’s all you would need to do just about anything,” Dylan wrote in his autobiography Chronicles Volume One.

Langhorne is also credited with inspiring Dylan to pen the song “Mr. Tambourine Man,” a legendary cut in its own right that was transformed into a Number One smash by the Byrds.

“‘Mr. Tambourine Man,” I think, was inspired by Bruce Langhorne,” Dylan recounted in the liner notes to his Biograph box set. “Bruce was playing guitar with me on a bunch of the early records. On one session, [producer] Tom Wilson had asked him to play tambourine. And he had this gigantic tambourine. It was like, really big. It was as big as a wagon-wheel. He was playing, and this vision of him playing this tambourine just stuck in my mind. He was one of those characters … he was like that. I don’t know if I’ve ever told him that.”

In addition to his work with Dylan – which included Dylan’s 1973 soundtrack for Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid – Langhorne also recorded with Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Rush, Richard & Mimi Fariña and many more.

As the New York Times notes, Langhorne also performed alongside folk legend Odetta at the 1963 March on Washington, playing moments before Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
