On the Charts: Chainsmokers' 'Memories' Opens at Number One

The Chainsmokers became the first dance artist to top the Billboard 200 in over three years as the duo’s new LP Memories… Do Not Open opened at Number One.

Memories sold 221,000 total copies in its debut week, with the Chainsmokers benefiting from a package deal that bundled their new album with ticket purchases for their upcoming tour. As Billboard notes, Memories… Do Not Open is the first album to simultaneously top both the Billboard 200 and the Top Dance/Electronic Albums charts since Lady Gaga’s Artpop in November 2013.

Memories… Do Not Open led a pack of four new releases that opened up in the Top 10: A cappella group Pentatonix claimed their seventh Top 10 album as PTX Vol. IV: Classics entered at Number Four and 54,000 total copies, with Joey Bada$$’s All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ finishing one spot later at Number Five and 51,000 total units.

Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy closed out the Top 10 at Number 10, with the acid-dropping singer-songwriter scoring the best debut – both sales-wise and charts-wise – of his career.

After three straight weeks at Number One, Drake’s More Life dipped one place to Number Two, adding another 108,000 (mostly streamed) copies to its haul. Ed Sheeran’s Divide ended the week at Number Three. Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic remains a Top 10 fixture as it settled at Number Six, ahead of the Moana soundtrack (Seven), Kodak Black’s Painting Pictures (Eight) and Future’s self-titled LP (Nine).

The Chainsmokers’ reign will be short-lived as Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. will no doubt rule the Billboard 200 next week.

Mysteryland Festival Canceled Due to 'Unforeseen Circumstances'

Mysteryland USA, the American offshoot of the long-running EDM festival that has invaded the site of the original Woodstock for the past three years, canceled their 2017 fest on Saturday.

In a statement, organizers explained that “unforeseen circumstances” had forced them to scrap the festival, scheduled for Bethel, New York from June 9th to 12th.

LCD Soundsystem, Major Lazer and G-Eazy were recruited to headline the festival, with Run the Jewels, Die Antwoord, Big Gigantic and dozens of EDM artists also on the bill.

“Mysteryland USA will no longer take place in 2017,” organizers wrote in a statement, adding that ticket buyers should soon begin receiving refunds.

“Since 2014, we have strived to produce the best possible experience for our festival attendees, and are truly humbled by all of the love and support that you, the artists, the beautiful venue of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and the Town of Bethel have shown us as we celebrated life through music, culture and art.”

No explanation was provided for the cancellation, nor did organizers state whether the festival would return in 2018.

One of Rolling Stone‘s Must-See Music Festivals for three straight years, Mysteryland was an extension of the famed dance festival that has popped up in the Netherlands every August since 1993. The U.S. outpost often drafted from the marquee EDM acts for its lineup, although the 2017 lineup aimed for a wider appeal with artists like LCD Soundsystem and G-Eazy.

See Harry Styles Play Mick Jagger, Perform New Songs on 'SNL'

Harry Styles took over Saturday Night Live as the One Direction singer popped up in multiple sketches while also serving as musical guest.

In one sketch, “Celebrity Family Feud: Time Travel Edition,” Styles was called upon to play a young Mick Jagger, with Styles hilariously embellishing the Rolling Stones singer’s trademark mannerisms.

When Kenan Thompson’s Steve Harvey complimented Jagger’s solo output, the singer responded, “Solo? Why would anyone in a successful band go solo? That is insane,” a nod to the (temporary?) dissolution of Styles’ One Direction.

The “Celebrity Family Feud” bit was one of three sketches that the singer and burgeoning actor appeared in as Styles planted the seeds for a potential  SNL hosting/musical guest double duty spot in the not-too-distant future.

Styles also made a cameo during Jimmy Fallon’s David Bowie-inspired opening monologue, then reappeared again during the a musical sketch about Civil War soldiers around a campfire:

On top of all the sketch appearances, Styles also debuted a new acoustic number titled “Ever Since New York,” a track off his upcoming self-titled solo LP:

Styles also delivered an impassioned rendition of “Sign of the Times,” the first single off Harry Styles, due out May 12th.

Watch Lady Gaga Debut Surprise New Single 'The Cure' at Coachella

Lady Gaga dropped a surprise new song at Coachella Saturday as the singer premiered her single “The Cure” during her headlining set Saturday night.

The dancehall-inspired synth-pop track popped up midway through Gaga’s 18-song, career-spanning set, which also featured “Bad Romance,” “Poker Face,” “The Edge of Glory” and “Telephone,” her collaboration with Beyoncé; Gaga was substituting for the pregnant Beyoncé, who was the initial Coachella headliner but will instead perform at the 2018 fest.

“The Cure” arrives just six months after Gaga released her fifth LP Joanne. It’s unclear whether “The Cure” is destined for a Joanne reissue, a one-off single or evidence that Gaga is already working on a follow-up; the singer told the Coachella crowd she was “back in the studio.”

“My new single ‘The Cure’ is available on iTunes now,” Gaga told the Coachella crowd as her set ended. As promised, soon after Gaga’s performance, the singer dropped the studio version of “The Cure” on streaming services, as well as the single’s cover art.
